We will also have the opportunity to see the Government Palace “La Moneda”.
(Lunch included).
Day 3:
REMEMBRANCE TOURToday we start our program with a Remembrance Talk from an expert who will give us a thorough overview and explanation about the events preceding and during General Pinochet’s time in power. The past 35 years of the city’s history hold many testimonies of the events that occurred during the 1973 Military Coup which extended its stay in power during 17 years under General Pinochet’s Regime. The talk will allow you to learn about the two extreme political points of view, which are still very evident in Chilean society.
After our talk, we will meet people that worked for and against the military coup of 1973 and we will see the places that witnessed the events that happened more than 30 years ago. This is a long day, which provides a moving encounter of divided opinions and realities, which continue to play a key role in Chile today. Some of the attractions we will visit are Palacio de La Moneda, Augusto Pinochet Foundation, National Stadium, Villa Grimaldi, and General Cemetery. Later in the evening, we will enjoy a dinner where we will also have the opportunity to enjoy a show of traditional dances from Chile and Easter Island.
(Dinner and breakfast included).

We will then make our way to our accommodations where dinner will be served.

We will also have the chance to taste some of their fine wines.
(Night in Curico).
Day 6:
CURICO- SCHOOL- WILD FRUIT COLLECTION- SALTO DEL LAJAWe will depart early in the morning and continue our journey down south visiting a group of organic producers who are a part of the cultural action workshop group TAC (Taller Acción Cultural). Next to the working house of this organization is a small rural school where children from 6 to 12 years old will invite to see a little about their daily lives. We will have the opportunity to give them small presents, educational materials and souvenirs from our countries. After this encounter we will walk to the working house of TAC in this small rural village.
TAC is a group of cultural workers that organized people from local communities into eight committees and in 1999 began to develop a ”wild fruit” collection program. Today we will visit one of these committees - the “Comité de Recolectores de Frutas Silvestres“ - which works with dried fruits and herbs such as membrillo (quinces), wild mushrooms and rosehips. Besides making their living by selling food to workers of small and intermediate companies in the neighborhood, the women are able to do their business in an autonomous manner. Today we will learn how they have managed to maintain this program and overcome difficulties along the years and how they have been able to continue without direct government funding. We will learn about their organization and we will see their products. Later on, we will drive to our hotel located next to the impressive waterfalls of Salto Del Laja.
(Breakfast and lunch included).

SALTO DEL LAJA – YUMBEL – TEMUCO (aprox. 220km)After waking up with a beautiful view of the waterfalls, and a light breakfast, we will take a short walk to visit the waterfalls of Salto Del Laja before heading to the colonial town of Yumbel. Here we will visit the CET (Centro de Educacion y Tecnologia). The CET is an institution dedicated to the investigation, diffusion and passing on of agricultural techniques with low or no impact on the environment with an emphasis on organic and sustainable agriculture. We will meet with a group of seed cultivators before heading to the CET. We will hear about their projects and explore the plantation area to learn about it and see the results of their different activities, including recycling. In the scanty and eroded soil in this region, it is amazing how many various plants can be cultivated with these techniques. Later we head towards Temuco, the capital city of the IX Region, where we’ll spend the night.
(Breakfast and lunch included).
Day 8:
TEMUCO – CHOL CHOL - PUCÓN (appr. 112km)Early breakfast at the hotel. Today most of our activities will be focused and catered to the indigenous Mapuche culture. We’ll take a short trip around the city of Temuco where we see our first expressions of Mapuche art and crafts at the city’s local market. Then we will visit Fundación Chol – Chol, a foundation which works to help and support local Indigenous Mapuche women and their forestation projects. We will gather around the fire next to a traditional “Ruka” (meeting house) to hear how the foundation was created and to get to know its history and the tasks the Foundation had to solve to become a fair trade producer.
A local Mapuche lady will then explain to us some insights about the Mapuche culture and give us a demonstration of how the traditional Mapuche clothing is put on and worn, as well as showing us their very unusual silver jewelry. To a background of Mapuche music, lunch will be served inside the Ruka, giving us the opportunity to taste a variety of the traditional Mapuche foods. After lunch we will meet some of the Foundation Chol-Chol´s workers who will demonstrate to us their different working textile techniques, including how to dye and weave wools in the traditional way. As we continue on our journey, we head to Pucon where we will see the first sights of the majestic Villarrica Volcano as it begins to shine through the clear skies. As we descend towards the town of Villarrica, the massive presence of the deep blue Villarrica Lake will lead us to our next stop. Once in Pucon, we’ll check into our hotel to leave the evening free to have dinner in one of the many excellent restaurants that can be found here.
(Breakfast and lunch included).
Comments on Day 8:
The Mapuche are an indigenous population, originally living in the South of Chile and Argentina. Their name means “people of the earth”, the language spoken is Mapudungun. Some of the Mapuches in the south of the country managed to resist the Spanish conquerors for 300 years. Today, as a result of aggressive colonial economic models that lead to the indigenous people being exploited, and a variety of illnesses, they only represent 4% of the Chilean population. Many of them live in cities, but keep in strong connection with their original communities and still fight for the acknowledgement of their territories and culture.
Day 9:
PUCÓNBreakfast will be served in the morning and then you are free until we head off to Pucon. Our tour will begin with an impressive scenery where will have the chance to take photos of the volcano and the lake, as well as going for a short walk. On clear days you can see remarkable views of the scenery including the lake on which Pucon sits in the distance. Later in the evening, we will have the chance to relax and have dinner in one of the many restaurants in the town.
(Breakfast included).
Day 10:
PUCÓN - PAILLACO – VALDIVIAWe check out of our hotel early to head to Paillaco, to meet ”Chino”, the charismatic man behind Apicoop, another of Traidcraft’s suppliers. Today we will meet the producers and learn about Traidcrafts latest product from Chile, blueberries. In the evening we will head to Valdivia, where we will enjoy a meal at the Kunstmann restaurant where they produce hundreds of different styles of beer, including the beer which uses Apicoops honey in its production process.
(Breakfast and lunch included).
Day 11:
VALDIVIA - PAILLACOToday, after breakfast, we head back to the district of Paillaco where we will see Chino again, and visit Apicoops’ honey production facilities. We’ll be able to learn more about their production of honey, about the organization of the cooperative, we will meet the workers and afterwards some of the cooperatives beekeepers. After lunch we’ll hit the road again to Valdivia. The evening will be free for those who want to catch up on some rest or to discover the different attractions that can be found in town.
(Breakfast and lunch included).
Comments on Day 11:
The Beekeepers Co-operative (Apicoop) was established in 1997. Creating a co-operative meant also laying down the foundations for an independent social organization, which was deemed to be necessary for the economic reconstruction of the countryside that was devastated during the military dictatorship. Apicoop aims to develop apiculture as a supplementary income generating activity for rural families. More than hundred families of the Valdivia region work for it, 20% of them are of Mapuche origins. The benefits for the local community are ample: Farmers learning new technical, administrative and management skills, families increasing their income and thus being enabled to cover the school costs for their children.
Day 12:
VALDIVIA – SANTIAGO – PAIS DE DESTINOAfter breakfast at the hotel, you will catch your flight back to Santiago where you will connect directly at Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport, with route to the UK. SANTIAGO’S CULTURAL TOUR
Tour Details
Chile has a rich and varied history which is best to discover in 4 famous museums of Santiago.First, stop by the Pre-Colombian Art Museum near the Plaza de Armas which chronicles around 4,500 years of Central and South American civilizations before the arrival of the Spanish in 1492. Discover artwork, statues, jewelry and ceramics from a variety of indigenous cultures, including the ancient Chinchorro mummies from northern Chile which are 2,000 years older than the Egyptian equivalent.
Continue the journey through Chilean history and visit the Colonial Museum. It displays amongst other arts a collection of colonial religious paintings, silverworks, and a replica of Gabriela Mistral’s Nobel Literature medal, which she was awarded in 1945.
Next stop is the Church of St Francis, Santiago’s oldest surviving colonial building. The church’s foundation stones were laid in 1572, but it was not finished until 1618. Since then, parts of it have been rebuilding after earthquake damages but it has mainly survived in its original state.
Drive south of the centre to the Cousiño Palace, one of Santiago’s most spectacular mansions. Dating from 1871, this palace was built by the wealthy Cousiño-Goyenechea family, who made their fortune from wine-making, coal and silver mining. It is full of beautiful furniture and artworks which were brought over from France in the family’s cargo ships. Opened as a museum in 1977, it was declared a National Monument in 1981. Descendants of the family still own the Cousiño Macul vineyards today.
